New Scams Affecting Georgetown Residents:
Donations for the Eastern MA Babe Ruth Baseball League
Man going around town claiming to be a grandfather soliciting donations. He is asking residents and business owners to leave blank checks outside their doors. If you've given him money, please call the Georgetown Police. If you receive a call, do not give him money as we cannot verify who he is.
IRS Telephone Scam
Scammer claims to work for the IRS and informs victims they owe money that needs to be paid immediately through a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers, may be able to recite the last 4 digits of the victim's SSN, and may spoof the IRS toll-free number on a victim's caller ID. Scammers threaten victims with lawsuits or jail time if they don't comply.
If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and contact the Georgetown Police. Never purchase pre-paid debit cards to give to a caller, and never send a wire transfer to someone you don't know.
