Murphy B. Seifert, 21, and Michael Gonzalez, 20, were pulled over on West Main after Seifert was noticed driving his blue Mazda erratically down North Street towards Georgetown square. Georgetown police followed the car down North Street and onto West Main after it turned right at the light.
Master Patrolman Scott Hatch and Officer Derek Jones arrested the two men when Seifert failed a field sobriety test, according to Sgt. Dave Thomson.
“They were followed and observed going across the double lines,” said Thomson. “We try to follow them long enough to verify their erratic driving, but stop them before they have an accident.”
Seifert was arrested for OUI liquor, a marked lanes violation, and not having his driver’s license in his possession.
His passenger Michael Gonzalez was found to be carrying a stiletto style knife, said Sgt. Thomson. He was arrested on charges of carrying a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm without an identification card. He will also get a civil citation for marijuana possession.
The two men were transported to the Georgetown Police Station where they decided to spend the night in a cell rather than post the $40.
They were arraigned several hours later in Haverhill District Court before Judge Patricia Dowling and both entered not guilty pleas. Both were told to return to court on July 6 for a pretrial hearing. They were warned if they have any further legal trouble while their case is pending, they could be held in jail for up to 60 days without bail.
The prosecutor for both men on June 1 was Ashlee Dole. Attorney Greg Joy is representing Seifert, and attorney Lee Graham is representing Gonzalez.
