Georgetown - The Georgetown Police Department is investigating a vandalism spree that resulted in 24 mailboxes being destroyed in town, most being driven over by a vehicle.
Police started receiving calls during the early morning hours on Sunday, Dec. 7 from residents saying their mailboxes had been damaged or destroyed overnight. Calls continued through the day from 4:40 a.m. until 4 p.m. Two traffic signs owned by the town were also run over.
“We believe they are all connected and we’re following up on leads now,” said Police Chief James Mulligan.
Detective Supervisor Thomas DeJoy and Officer Neil Turmenne responded to the calls on Abbey Road, White Pine Drive, Marlboro Road, Wilkins Terrace, Searle Street, Lisa Lane and Bussing Way. There they observed vehicle parts left at some of the scenes where the mailboxes had been damaged.
Parts included an exterior rearview mirror, grill parts and headlight lenses. The officers collected the car parts as evidence.
While taking a report from an Abbey Road resident, Turmenne was checking the area for further damage and discovered a vehicle backed into a driveway with front-end damage that was consistent with the vehicle parts recovered. Mulligan called it the break in the case.
The unregistered vehicle was eventually seized and processed for evidence.
DeJoy and Detective James Rodden are conducting the ongoing investigation.
