Georgetown — On Sunday night, 24-year-old Ryan Donahue of Amesbury was arrested on West Main Street in Georgetown for disorderly conduct, receiving stolen property and possession of a Class A drug believed to be heroin.

According to Police Chief James Mulligan, the arrest came after the Haverhill Police Department put out a general broadcast asking area police to be on the lookout for a Ford Taurus with Massachusetts plates in connection with a shoplifting incident at Market Basket in Haverhill.

Sgt. Kevin DeFeo responded and observed the Ford Taurus heading east on West Main Street, Mulligan said. According to the police report, DeFeo pulled out to get the plate number, and the driver of the Taurus turned right and pulled into the parking lot of Dina’s Roast Beef and Seafood.

Quoting the report, Mulligan said that when DeFeo approached the vehicle, Donahue, who was the passenger in the Taurus, got out of the car and started to run into the restaurant. After repeated requests, Donahue returned to the vehicle, and DeFeo collected identification from him and the driver, Henry Spra.

According to the report, when Donahue heard the officer on the radio notifying Haverhill police, he put his hands in his pants as if he were trying to conceal something. Donahue refused repeated requests to remove his hands from his pants and put his hands behind his head. Mulligan said that at this point, the officer put Donahue in handcuffs and told him he was under arrest for being a disorderly person.

The report states that a blue container was found near the passenger door of the Taurus, and a bag believed to be heroin was found inside. According to Donahue’s arrest report, the police seized 0.050 grams of heroin valued at $10.

In the car, Mulligan said the officers also found between six and 10 packages of steak and chicken labeled with Market Basket stickers and valued at a total of approximately $110.

In addition, the report stated that officers found a black case containing two capped needles, two pipes typically used to smoke crack and heroin and other drug paraphernalia. Mulligan explained that when the driver was asked about the case he said it belonged to Donahue.

Mulligan said that the state police drug-sniffing dog was called to the scene to search the car as well.

“The dog found nothing else in the car,” Mulligan said.

According to Mulligan, the driver, Spra, will be summonsed on charges of receiving stolen property.

Donahue was released to Middleton Jail, and his bail was set at $1,500. He will be arraigned in Haverhill District Court.

Mulligan praised Officer DeFeo for his quick response to the situation, locating the vehicle minutes after the broadcast went out.

“Our officers are very proactive,” he said.
