Georgetown — Jeff Boragine and his family say they can’t believe someone would do this. Sometime overnight on Sunday, July 10, thieves smashed the take-out window at Henborg’s Ice Cream and took all the money they could find. That included the donations that have been building up for Family Movie Night and for Cruise Night, as well as the store’s bank deposit.
Georgetown police Detective Supervisor Tom DeJoy said fingerprints discovered at the scene will be sent to Massachusetts State Police for processing.
DeJoy and Officer Keith DeGuio took evidence from Henborg’s on Monday morning after Boragine reported the break-in to police.
A Nunan’s employee phoned Boragine around 6:30 a.m. on Monday to report the break-in. He said his family was stunned when they saw what had been done to their business.
“We were confused, surprised, shocked and upset,” Boragine said. “Words can’t describe how we felt and still feel.”
Surveillance cameras at the ice cream shop on the Nunan’s Florist and Greenhouse property were not working at the time of the break-in, but have been fixed and are back up and running, Boragine said.
“A brick was thrown through the serving window, and there was a lot of glass scattered everywhere,” Boragine said. “There is a dent on the freezer where the rock hit.
“I wish I knew who these punks are. I would like to send a message to everyone to keep their eyes and ears peeled to see if anyone is talking about it.”
Henborg’s is in its sixth season. The shop sells 41 flavors of ice cream, sundaes, sodas and frappes, breakfast sandwiches, doughnuts, and home-cooked lunches. The stand features fresh-squeezed lemonade and lime rickeys made from fresh-squeezed limes. A soda fountain with tall stools lends itself to socializing over ice creams.
The four co-owners of this indoor/outdoor ice cream stand are Debbie Hennessey, her sons Ralph and Jeff Boragine, and their stepfather Dave Hennessey.
The family likes giving back to the community, and the stolen donation money was for free Family Movie Nights and Cruise Nights where vintage cars are on display.
This year the family, as well as Nunan’s, took on the job of hosting a farmers market every Saturday until October.
The family spent Monday trying to clean the damaged ice cream shop and sort everything out.
Georgetown police are investigating. They would like to hear from anyone with information on this crime. You can call 978-352-5700 or 978-352-5705 and ask for DeJoy or Detective James Rodden.
