Georgetown Police Advisory: Canadian Jail Scam
Georgetown — Georgetown police have reported that numerous Georgetown residents have been receiving telephone calls from persons pretending to be family members, who say they have been arrested in Canada. The caller will go on to say that they need money wired to them in Canada so that they can pay the fines and get out of jail. The fine amount is usually $2,500.
Elderly persons seem to be the target of this scam. The suspects will claim to be nieces, nephews or grandchildren of the person whom they are calling. They will say that they have a cold and that is the reason their voice sounds funny. The phone numbers from which they are calling will usually show up as “Unavailable” on caller ID systems.
Anyone who receives a phone call like this should hang up and notify the local police department. Anyone with further questions about this scam may call the Georgetown Police Department, 978-352-5700.
