IRS Telephone Scam

Recurring

Scammer claims to work for the IRS and informs victims they owe money that needs to be paid immediately through a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers, may be able to recite the last 4 digits of the victim's SSN, and may spoof the IRS toll-free number on a victim's caller ID. Scammers threaten victims with lawsuits or jail time if they don't comply.

If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and contact the Georgetown Police. Never purchase pre-paid debit cards to give to a caller, and never send a wire transfer to someone you don't know.
