Health and Wellness Programs and Activities

Blood Pressure Clinic:

The Public Health Nurse is available to check blood pressure, conduct heart assessments, provide medication information  and discuss other medical concerns with elders on the first Wednesday of each month 9:30 -10:30 a.m. at the Georgetown Senior Community Center located at 51 North Street in Georgetown.

Wellness Education Programs:

Each month, the Georgetown Council on Aging hosts a variety of wellness and health education programs. Programs are generally held at the Georgetown Senior Community Center located at 51 North Street in Georgetown. Please refer to the monthly newsletter or the senior calendar for program topics, dates and times.

Yoga:

Weekly classes that involve gentle stretching with breathing techniques designed to improve balance, mobility and strength. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a floor mat. Classes are held at the Georgetown Senior Community Center located at 51 North Street in Georgetown. A $3 donation is suggested. Please call for the current schedule.

Strength Training:

Weekly classes designed to increase strength, improve conditioning and mobility. Classes are held at the Georgetown Senior Community Center located at 51 North Street in Georgetown. A $3 donation is suggested. Please call for the current schedule.

Tai Chi:

Weekly classes designed to increase flexibility, balance, mobility and decrease stress. Classes are held  at the Georgetown Senior Community Center located at 51 North Street in Georgetown. A $3 donation is suggested. Please call for the current schedule.

Exercise Class:

Weekly classes designed to increase flexibility, balance, mobility and increase strength and cardio fitness. Classes are held  at the Georgetown Senior Community Center located at 51 North Street in Georgetown. A $3 donation is suggested. Please call for the current schedule.

Walking Program:

A Walking Program is in place at the Georgetown Senior Community Center located at 51 North Street in Georgetown. At their own pace, participants are able to walk an outdoor loop on nearby streets or an indoor loop within the Senior Center. Walkers are asked to register with the Council on Aging before beginning the program.

Fitness Equipment Available at the Senior Center:

To offer an additional exercise opportunity, the COA has a fitness room at the Georgetown Senior Community Center.  The fitness includes two treadmills, two exercise bikes, a recumbent bike, free weights and resistance bands.  The equipment is available for use when the exercise classes are not underway.  For scheduling information, please call the COA at 978-352-5726.

Hot Lunch Program:

Providing a nutritious lunch with important socialization, a Grab and Go lunch is served Monday through Thursday at the Georgetown Senior Community Center located at 51 North Street in Georgetown. Reservations are needed one week in advance by calling 978-352-5726. Suggested donation is $2.

Food Pantry:

As an outreach program, the COA has a food pantry located at the Georgetown Senior Community Center.  The program is designed to serve local elders.  No income restrictions apply.  Appointments are required by calling the COA at 978-352-5726.

 

Men’s Breakfast:

Men’s breakfast held monthly on the first Thursday, 9:30 a.m at the Georgetown Senior Community Center located at 51 North Street in Georgetown. Enjoy a nutritious hot breakfast with socialization and educational speakers. Reservations are needed one week in advance.

Durable Medical Equipment Lending Program:

The COA has durable medical equipment to lend including walkers, bath seats, canes and wheelchairs.  For information, please call the COA at 978-352-5726.

S.H.I.N.E. Program:

The SHINE Program (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) is available to provide free one-on-one health care information, counseling and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries.  Appointments can be scheduled with a SHINE Counselor by calling the Georgetown Senior Community Center at 978-352-5726.

 

Medical Transportation:

Through the NEET program, volunteer drivers are available to provide elders with transportation to medical appointments. A donation of 43 cents per mile is suggested. Arrangements are necessary three business days in advance.

Handicap Placards:

The Council on Aging has applications for Handicap Placards available from the Registry of Motor Vehicles at the Georgetown Senior Community Center.  For information and assistance, please call the COA at 978-352-5726.

Grocery Shop:

The COA van is available Tuesdays and Thursdays for weekly grocery shopping trips. Reservations are necessary two days in advance. A donation of $2 is suggested.

Food and Heat Resources:

The COA has information regarding state and local resources for food and heating assistance available at the Georgetown Senior Community Center.  For information and assistance, please call 978-352-5726.
