Georgetown Police nab suspects in Taylor Street break-in

Georgetown — Georgetown Police say they solved the May 9 Taylor Street break-and-enter case just two days later, on the afternoon of May 11, beginning with their arrest of 17-year-old Daniel A. Namiatov of Georgetown.

At the time of the break-in, the Georgetown High School student was truant from school. Namiatov is charged with breaking-and-entering in daytime with the intent to commit a felony and with possession of class E drugs. The latter are prescription drugs that allegedly do not belong to the youth.

Police also worked with the father of a 16-year-old Georgetown juvenile, who delivered his son to the police station when the father suspected that his son was involved in the break-in. According to Georgetown Police Detective Supervisor Thomas DeJoy, after the 16-year-old was advised of his Miranda rights, he admitted wrongdoing in the Taylor Street attempted break-in and discussed another alleged break-in in this town.

According to DeJoy, “The juvenile was not arrested but he will be summonsed to Lawrence Juvenile Court to face the charge of breaking and entering in the daytime with the intent to commit a felony.” Despite some reports that said this boy was “playing hooky” from school, DeJoy said the juvenile was apparently not truant from school but had been released for the day to do some work-study activity.

Instead of working, the juvenile allegedly joined up with Namiatov. According to DeJoy, in taped interviews the police learned that the two young men claimed that they “just had a discussion. They were saying, ‘Isn’t it interesting that people aren’t at home during the day?’” DeJoy said.

“Both admitted it was a stupid thing to do,” the detective supervisor added.

Observant witness, responsive community

DeJoy said the investigation got off to a strong start thanks to the observations of the 20-year-old woman who was napping in her Taylor Street home when the intruders arrived. “Due to the fact that the female victim got a good look at one of the two male suspects and was able to give us a very good description of him, we brought in a sketch artist from Lincoln,” De Joy said.

DeJoy said the Georgetown police received a number of calls from residents after that sketch was distributed around town and posted on the wickedlocalgeorgetown website.  But officials at the high school were key after Detective Jim Rodden asked them to look at the sketch.

“School officials led us to a very strong suspect,” DeJoy said. “We were able to obtain his address.” Rodden said that after police tried without success to make contact at the home, he set up surveillance in the area until Namiatov, readily recognizable from the police drawing, was seen walking in down the street.

Rodden is not convinced by the boy’s story of prankster activity. “They tried to say it was one mistake but it was an afternoon of poor decisions and they had every intention of ripping people off,” the detective said.
