From Sept. 11-12, the Georgetown Police Department along with the Groveland Police Department, Essex County Sheriff’s Department and the Massachusetts State Police conducted a sobriety checkpoint and saturation patrols along West Main Street in Georgetown.
The “sting” was set up at 206 West Main St. beginning at 12:01 a.m. The purposes of the checkpoints are to reduce accidents and remove impaired drivers from the roadways. All arrests were printed in the police log in the Sept. 17 edition of the Georgetown Record.
Five people were arrested and charged with operating while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Two operators were stopped for Junior Operator License violations. This operation was considered a success, says Georgetown Chief James Mulligan.
Funds from this operation came from Federal Grants to the Massachusetts State Police.
