In several sentences explain why you decided to get involved with public safety.
When I was in college the police department was looking for part-time police officers. It was a great job to begin my career goals in Criminal Justice. Although I did not know exactly what area of Criminal Justice I would study, after working as a police officer for a couple of years, it was clear law enforcement was my first choice.
Who inspired you and how?
My mother passed away from cancer when I was 18 years old. She was extremely energetic and had the tenacity to always get what she wanted. I would have to say my mother inspired me to achieve what I have accomplished today.
What are the greatest challenges in your field?
The constant change in society's values is the biggest challenge the police face today. What may have been important 10 years ago is non-existent today. Officers must adapt to these changes and not allow their personal views to interfere with their responsibility to the public.
What advice can you offer for someone who wants to go into public safety?
Serving in the public safety sector today is about honesty and integrity. The public demands it each and every day. If someone wants to serve the public, you have to ensure you have the values and integrity it takes to do this job.
What's something about your line of work that most people don't know?
A Police Officer's job today is primarily about being a mediator. Officers have to be able to create a level of safety and security while having to balance a large variance of opposing views about life in general.
What is a memorable moment in your career and why?
The most memorable moment in my career was when I was finally promoted to Sergeant. My entire family attended the swearing in ceremony and it was valuable lesson to my daughters that if you work hard everyday it will eventually pay off.
