Pedal Partners Meet Their PMC Riders

(NECN: Jennifer Eagan) - The Pan Mass Challenge grows nearer. This even has raised nearly $240 million for cancer research and treatment over its nearly 30-year history.

At Fenway park on Saturday, dozens of young cancer patients and their families got a chance to meet the teams that will be pedaling for a cure come August.

"When I get tired or fatigued, I'm just going to push that aside and just realize that any pain that I go through out there on the ride is nothing compared to what these kids go through," PMC rider (and Georgetown Police Officer) Derek Jones said.

He will be riding for Connor Jones, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in November. Connor wants to be a police officer when he grows up, just like Derek.

For the second year, Team NECN will be pedaling for 10-year-old Caroline Lane.

"The PMC is such an amazing event," Lane said. "It raises so much money for kids like me and kids that are still in the hospital. It's just amazing."

The PMC raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country. Since 1980, it has raised money for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund.

Matt Bodenrader was the first pedal partner ever to go on and ride in the event.

"It's definitely a time to give back to the people who helped me," Bodenrader said.
