Police warn of Pentucket youth sports scam

MERRIMAC — Police are warning residents to be wary of someone calling homes impersonating a coach seeking donations for Pentucket youth sports programs.

Sgt. Eric Shears yesterday said the Police Department has received a couple calls from residents about a man calling homes this week identifying himself as John McNamara and soliciting money on behalf of Pentucket sports leagues to pay for summer gym time.

The man, who identified himself as being with both Pentucket River Baseball and Pentucket Youth Basketball leagues to different callers, said he would be by later in the day to pick up the donation.

One of the people the man called is acquainted with McNamara and knew it wasn't him on the phone, and subsequently notified league officials and police.

"It's a scam," Shears said.

Terry Beaton, director of Pentucket Youth Basketball, said in an email to coaches and others associated with the league that the caller does not have anything to do with the organization.

"The league is not raising money at this time and has never called households asking for donations," Beaton said.
