During the early morning hours of Sunday, December 7th, the Georgetown Police Department started to receive calls from residents stating that their mailboxes had been damaged or destroyed during the overnight. Most of the residents reported their mailboxes being driven over by a vehicle.
As Officer Neil Turmenne and Detective Supervisor Thomas DeJoy responded to the calls, they observed vehicle parts had been left at some of the scenes where the mailboxes had been damaged. Some of these parts included an exterior rear view mirror, grill parts, and headlight lenses. These parts were collected and saved as evidence.
The locations in town affected by this vandalism spree included Abbey Road, White Pine Drive, Marlboro Road, Wilkins Terrace, Searle Street, Lisa Lane, and Bussing Way.
Police got a break in the investigation when Officer Neil Turmenne had just finished taking a report from an Abbey Rd. resident. As he was checking the area for further damage, he observed a vehicle backed into a driveway with front end damage that was consistent with the vehicle parts that had been recovered.
The vehicle was eventually seized and processed for evidence. Police are investigating leads in the matter. In all, there were a total of 24 mailboxes that were destroyed along with 2 traffic control signs owned by the Town of Georgetown that were run over.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Detective Supervisor Thomas DeJoy and Detective James Rodden.
