Georgetown Fire Department Holds Open House
GEORGETOWN FIRE DEPT HOLDS ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE

Despite the threatening sky and high humidity the Georgetown Fire Department held its annual Open House that coincided with Georgetown Days on Saturday September 24.  Close to 200 children and adults toured the fire station, apparatus and learned some valuable fire safety lessons in the S.A.F.E. house.  Adults were offered free blood pressure checks when they toured the two new ambulances that were recently donated by the Central Fire Company.  A big hit was the Jr. Firefighter Challenge.  This was an obstacle-type course set up for children and mimicked many of the functions performed by firefighters.  Each child went through three stations which depicted actual jobs firefighters perform.  The first station was a forcible entry machine.  The children used a mallet to strike a block of wood in a chopping motion-simulating using an axe.  The second station was search and rescue.  The children would go into a tent and rescue a “victim”.  From here they crawled through a tunnel designed to simulate crawling through a smoke filled room.  The last station gave the children the opportunity to see what it’s like to handle a fire hose, with the assistance of a firefighter.  The children took the line and advanced it towards the house.  As they reached the house they opened the nozzle and put the “fire” out in the prop house.  Everyone had a great time.  Each child and adult received a bag filled with fire safety items.  A lot of thanks and appreciation came from Chief Al Beardsley to the firefighters for putting on such a great event.  “It takes an incredible amount of time and energy to put on an event such as the Annual Open House,” said the Chief.  He went on to say, “Planning and preparation takes many months and fortunately the costs incurred are paid through the S.A.F.E Grant program.”  S.A.F.E. stands for “Student Awareness Fire Education” and is a grant the Georgetown Fire Department has been able to secure several thousands of dollars from each year.  If you’re interested in learning more about the fire department please stop by anytime Monday thru Friday until 5 pm or call us at 978-352-5757.  We’re also on Facebook and the web at www.georgetownfd.com
