Firefighters Respond to Multiple Incidents on May 4th
The day shift team had a busy and challenging day on Tuesday May 4th.  At just past 7:45 am the Rescue and Car 1 ere dispatched for a medical aid call.  As the Rescue and Car 1 were returning at 8:05 am a tone was put out for an odor of gas in the Monroe Street area.  Responding to this call were Car 1, the Rescue and Engine 5.  On scene Car 1 was advised by a power company worker of a smell of natural gas in the area.  Crews checked the area but were unable to determine an exact location.  National Grid (gas) was requested to the scene.  As companies were getting back in their rigs another tone was put on for a motor vehicle crash on Route 95 south between exits 54 and 55.  While responding units were advised an AMR EMT was on scene and confirming entrapment and that the vehicle was off the road.  Engine 1 was additionally dispatched to the scene for added manpower.  Engine 5 and Car 1 arrived together and found a single vehicle approximately thirty feet off the road with the driver still inside.  When the vehicle left the road it hit a large tree snapping it about six feet up.  The car proceeded another few feet hitting a stand of trees head-on.  The impact jammed the driver’s door and pushed the door and roof into the passenger compartment.  A rapid patient evaluation and assessment determined the need to fly the victim to Boston.  An additional ALS ambulance was requested along with Boston Medflight to the scene.  Crews from Byfield Fire’s ambulance began patient stabilization as the Rescue used its hydraulic cutter and spreader to open up the vehicle.  Crews from Engines 1 and 5 assisted with patient extrication and packaging.  Medflight landed their helicopter on the south bound side of Route 95 and transported the patient to a Boston area hospital.  During the extrication process a Georgetown firefighter sustained a back injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.  While all of this was happening the Groveland Fire Department sent an engine company to cover Georgetown’s Central Station.  After this the day was far from over as the crew responded to two more medical aids and a fire alarm activation, all before 4 pm.
