Georgetown Firefighters Respond to Nor'easter

Georgetown firefighters responded to the recent Nor'easter in town pumping flooded basements and checking on the safety of residents.  Firefighters were called in starting early in the morning of Sunday March 14th and worked almost non-stop for close to 36 hours responding to various emergencies related to the storm.  Georgetown Fire Chief Albert Beardsley said, "It's easy to judge a storm's severity when you measure flooded basements by the foot and not by the inch."  This was typical of hundreds of homes and business throughout the Town.  At 4 am
on Monday morning units were dispatched to the Master Box for the Perley Elementary School where Deputy Chief Russ Moyer found over four feet of water in a maintenance room and water flooding a gym floor.  Decisions were made to close the school for the safety of children and staff alike.  By 9 pm Monday night firefighters were reaching the point of exhaustion and a decision was made to send personnel home for their own protection to get needed rest and check on their own homes.  Over three-hundred personnel hours were logged in addition to the regular shift hours.  "We had a pretty good handle on dispatches from the start of the storm.", the Chief said.  From the storm of two weeks ago we found putting three people in the Watch Room allowed one person to work the radio, one to answer the phone and answer questions and the third person acted as logistics to stage responders and dispatch equipment on a priority basis.  It worked very well throughout the emergency.  By Tuesday things were still busy and crews worked from 7 am to 6 pm, and again Wednesday we saw the workload lighten up considerably with only a couple of extra firefighters on-duty.  All in all we were very fortunate not to have any injuries to firefighters or civilians.  Chief Beardsley extends his thanks to all the firefighters for all their hard work throughout this emergency.
