Georgetown Fire Department Announces Newest EMT’s
Chief Al Beardsley is pleased to announce the successful completion of Emergency Medical Technician certification by Firefighters John Mangino and Shauna Silva.  The EMT certification process is a lengthy process that begins with classroom and practical sessions that meet a minimum of two evenings a week and often times on weekends.  Throughout their training EMT training candidates are given exams on the topics they are learning and are required to successfully complete the classroom training before moving on to the certification exam.  The EMT certification exam is given in two parts on two different occasions. The candidates go to a testing site where State Certification Examiners will give them scenarios on subjects such as CPR, broken bones, medical emergencies and more.  The candidate are graded and must successfully complete all of the stations in order to move on to the last phase, the written exam.  “It’s not an easy process.”, reports Chief Beardsley.  He went on to say, “Firefighters are required to spend many hours weekly in the classroom, and then there’s the study time needed for success.”  All in all, firefighters probably dedicate over 20 hours per week between the classroom and studying.  The addition of Firefighters Mangino and Silva bring fire department ranks to twenty-two trained and certified Emergency Medical Technicians.  Chief Beardsley said, “I salute the time, energy and efforts put forth by not only these two firefighters but all of our firefighters.  I’m very proud of all of them.”
