Firefighters Respond to String of Serious Motor Vehicle Crashes
The day shifts were kept busy in Georgetown as firefighters responded to a string of serious motor vehicle crashes.  The first crash occurred in the mid-afternoon of Monday June 22nd when Car 1, Rescue 1 and Engine 5 were dispatched to a head-on crash on Nelson Street.  Byfield ambulances transported four to area hospitals.

Fire units were barely back in the station 15 minutes cleaning up from the last call when civilians started running into the station alerting firefighters to a serious two-car accident in front of the Post Office on Central Street.  As units were pulling out of quarters into rush hour traffic they could see a one car in the street with front-end damage while another car was up on the sidewalk.  Closer look found this vehicle had run over two large dogs.  The owner was able to jump out of the way before impact.  It was reported that three passer-bys lifted the car up to extricate one of the dogs from under the car.  One driver was transported by AMR Ambulance while the two dogs, and their owner, were transported by a firefighter to a local vet hospital.  Unfortunately one of the dogs succumbed to injuries and at this time the other dog is still being treated at a vet hospital.  These two crashes were part of a busy day with the department responding to six calls in a 12-hour period.

Tuesday June 23rd firefighters were alerted in mid-afternoon to a motor vehicle crash with a roll over on Central Street near Nelson St.  On arrival Car 1 found a mini-van on its side with the female driver, conscious and alert, still inside.  Several passing motorists stopped to help in comforting the driver.  Additionally the vehicle had hit a utility pole breaking it into three sections as well as power and cable lines low and in the street.  After the scene was deemed safe for operations firefighters from Rescue 1 and Engine 5 utilized stabilizing struts along with stepping chocks to steady the vehicle.  Using the glass cutting saw the windshield was carefully cut away allowing access to the driver.  It was less than ten from the time of dispatch until the patient was extricated and in the ambulance.  The female driver was transported by Byfield FD ambulance to a local hospital.  While firefighters from Rescue 1 were cutting away the windshield, crews from Engine 5 checked locals homes for damage caused by stressed weather-heads.

On Wednesday morning June 24th the department was toned out for a motor vehicle crash, car into a tree, in the area of West Main Street and King Street.  On scene at King Street Car 1 found a car has gone off the road and into a tree with moderate front-end damage.  What made this call a little tougher was one of the victims was a two-year old child along with the mother.  Fortunately for all the injuries didn’t appear to be serious but as a precaution mother and child were transported by Byfield FD ambulance to the hospital.

All in all a very busy start to the week with firefighters responding to six medical aids, four motor vehicle crashes, two master boxes and one call for wires burning in the tree.
