GEORGETOWN FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO BOAT FIRE
Georgetown firefighters were toned out in the very early hours of Tuesday August 2nd for a reported boat fire extending into a house. Car 2 (Deputy Rusty Ricker) arrived on scene within six minutes and confirmed a fully involved boat fire with extension into the garage of a private home. Because Georgetown had an engine company standing by in Salisbury, Car 2 requested an engine company from Groveland to the scene immediately. A hydrant directly in front of the house provided adequate water supply. The fire was discovered by a neighbor when he heard a popping sound. Looking out the window he saw flames coming from the boat. The neighbor immediately called 911 ran over to his neighbor's house banging on the door to wake them up. Deputy Ricker reported when he arrived the
neighbor and homeowner had grabbed garden hoses in an effort to keep the fire at bay but their efforts were useless against the advancing heat. One inch-three quarters line went to work on the boat while another line was pulled to go after the burning structure and a third line was set up as a back-up. Arriving Car 1 (Chief Beardsley) took the transfer of command while Car 2 handle the fire fighting operations. Car 4 (Captain Bridges) was the scene Safety Officer. The fires were quickly brought under control within six minutes of companies arriving on scene. Apparatus responding included Engines 1, 4, Ladder 1, Rescue 1 and Byfield's Ambulance 1. Groveland's engine was diverted
to station coverage along with an engine company from Boxford. "The crews did an outstanding job of handling the boat fire and extension as well as checking for extension to an automobile parked in the driveway," reported Chief Beardsley. Crews remained on scene for about an hour. The boat was a total loss. The house suffered damaged siding as well as roof damage from the fire extension. The home owners car suffered a melted headlight and bumper as well as broken windows and blistering paint.
