At 0944 hours Georgetown PSAP began receiving 911 calls reporting a fire at the G. Mello trash Transfer Station on East Main Street in Georgetown.  As the duty crew on Engine 1 was suiting up Car 1, Chief Al Beardsley, signed on from the station reporting "heavy smoke showing."  On scene Car 1 found the 40' x 30' transfer shed fully involved and ordered Engine 1 to take a hydrant and lay in with a 4" feeder line.  As the hydrant person was making the hydrant Engine 1 opened up it deck gun and used its 750 gallons of tank water to start an initial knock-down.  Next due Ladder 1 was order to set up its ladder pipe and begin operations.  The Ladder was followed by Engine 5, Ambulance 12 and Rescue 1.  Mutual-aid engines to the scene were requested from Rowley and Groveland for manpower while Byfield FD responded with an ALS ambulance.  Station coverage was provided by an engine from Topsfield and a Tower from West Newbury.  With temperatures hovering close to 90 degrees combined with extremely high humidity crews were frequently rotated to the rehab sector set up by Rehab 5 from Peabody.  One firefighter suffered minor lacerations to the fingers.  The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes using a ladder pipe, deck gun, portable monitor and two class A foam lines.  Crews remained on scene until noontime overhauling the piles of trash and monitoring run-off.  Mutual-aid was released and companies back in service by 1230 hours.
