Georgetown’s two newest firefighters completed a three-day recruit orientation program this past weekend. After sitting through two evenings of classroom training Firefighters-On-Probation Rick Rausch and Danielle Brudnick, along with all of Georgetown’s newly recruited Fire Explorer Post members, participated in a day-long hands-on training. Topics covered included SCBA and PPE, forcible entry, ventilation, ladders, along with hydraulics and hose handling. The highlight of the day for the FFOP’s and oldest two Explorers, who will find themselves as FFOP’s come the Fall, was air management.
While wearing full turnout gear and being ‘on-air’ with their SCBA, these four were given a series of strenuous tasks to simulate typical work while firefighting. Ascending the stair-master, hauling a length of hose in the hose tower (up 25’ and back down), and carrying a load of dry hose on their shoulder. Once their low-air alarm went off, they were instructed to lie still to see how much air they actually could get out of “low air” in the event of an emergency.
Our firefighters face many challenges throughout their time with the GTFD, the intensive training received as FFOP’s prepares our newest firefighters to effectively respond to fires and emergencies. This, along with a comprehensive monthly training schedule makes all Georgetown Firefighters, new and old, as prepared as they possibly can be for most any emergency that they might come across.
