FF Rob Palardy Certified as GTFD's Newest EMT
Georgetown Fire Department Chief Albert Beardsley is pleased to announce the completion by Firefighter Robert Palardy as our newest certified State Emergency Medical Technician.  The addition of Firefighter Palardy to our roster brings the fire department ranks to 22 EMT’s or about 65% of the total firefighting staff.  Attaining the certification for Emergency Medical Technician is a major accomplishment for anyone.  Often times the EMT classes meet several times a week in the evenings and as much as one or two Saturdays a month.  During these classes EMT candidates receive the latest and most up to date instruction on a variety of life saving skills and medical emergency protocols.  Subjects include recognizing signs and symptoms of stroke, cardiac emergencies, allergic reactions, handling of possibly fractured bones and identifying hazardous situations.  During the class candidates are given exams on a regular basis culminating in a final exam.  Candidates must successfully pass the class final exam before being allowed to move on to the State exams.  The State EMT exam process is in two parts.  Students must first complete a skills assessment exam that consists of the candidate being presented with a medical emergency.  The candidate then assesses the situation and applies the appropriate protocol for the scenario presented.  Scenarios include CPR and use of an Automatic External Defibulator (AED), stabilizing a patient, medical and trauma assessments.  Once a candidate successfully completes the “hands-on” practical phase, they can apply to take the written exam.  This exam consists of 100 questions of which a candidates must attain a minimum score of 70 in order to pass.  Chief Beardsley reports, “…the addition of Firefighter Palardy as an EMT continues to expand the service capabilities of the Georgetown Fire Department.”  Beardsley went on to say, “I’m very proud to see another firefighter completing this difficult and challenging process, and look forward to more firefighters completing their EMT training.”  If you’re interested in learning more about the Georgetown Fire Department EMT’s, or in becoming a Georgetown firefighter, please visit our website at www.georgetownfd.com or stop by the station.
